What Causes Whiplash?

A whiplash injury occurs when the head and neck are thrown very quickly in one direction and then rebounds in the opposite direction.  Because the second, snapping motion happens faster than the spinal structure can recover, the muscles, ligaments, and bones in the neck are damaged.  This type of injury can also occur in hard falls and diving accidents.

The greatest amount of injury in a typical rear-end collision is from the shifting about of the victim’s spine.  The more the vehicle is accelerated and propelled forward, the more “whipping” action occurs.

Studies indicate that injury can occur at impact speeds of 8 mph where there is little or even no damage to the car.  Even in these types of accidents, the head can receive up to 2 ½ times more force than the car itself.

When the head is rotated (as in talking to someone) or inclined, (as it may be looking up and out through the rear view mirror), the severity of the injury increases substantially.

Tell Tale Signs of Injury

Many times, severe whiplash can be detected immediately after a mishap.  However, a whiplash injury may take hours, weeks, months, or even years before symptoms are noticed.  This is due in part to the bleeding and formation of scar tissue that occurs in the deep soft tissues that surround the injured area.

In some cases, whiplash pain can appear at the time of injury, and then decrease as time goes by.  Later severe symptoms can occur when excessive stress is placed on the spine, signaling an untreated whiplash injury.

The most obvious symptom of whiplash, even in mild cases, is neck and shoulder pain.  But, beware of symptoms you may not relate to the whiplash injury such as headaches, dizziness, stiffness, nausea, numbness and tingling in the arms or hands, weakness, swelling, back and chest pain, and blurred vision.

Consider the Facts:

Although the “rear-ender” type of accident represents only 20% of motor vehicle accidents, it causes over 80% of injuries giving long term and persistent symptoms.

A surprised accident victim does not have a chance to brace for impact, which can result in more serious injury to the spine and nervous system.

An older accident victim will generally suffer a more serious injury because of decreased elasticity, dramatic loss of flexibility and strength, and slowing of the natural healing rate.

In general, a woman’s lighter musculature means that she will have a higher incident of injury.

In a typical collision, having the head turned to one side such as when talking to another passenger, can dramatically increase the amount of neck injury.

50% of accident victims sustain injuries to the low back, and of these 15% develop serious nerve damage

Treating A Whiplash Injury:

A successful treatment plan consists of the following steps:

  • Correction of the spinal structure with manipulation to remove stress on muscles and increase range of motion.
  • Therapies to help reduce pain, relax muscles, and heal deep soft tissue scarring.
  • Rehabilitation, stretching, and strengthening exercises are used to strengthen the supporting muscles and increase range of motion.
  • Likewise, prolonged rest, inactivity and use of cervical collars have been found to lengthen disability time.

In addition to caring for your injury, we can provide a comprehensive evaluation of injuries sustained as a result of an automobile accident or fall and will provide your insurance company and/or attorney with full documentation of our findings.

Spinal Decompression

Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression is a revolutionary new technology used primarily to treat disc injuries in the neck and in the low back.  This treatment option is very safe and utilized  FDA cleared equipment to apply distraction forces to spinal structures in a precise and graduated manner.  Distraction is offset by cycles of partial relaxation.  This technique of Spinal decompression therapy, that is, unloading due to distraction and positioning, has shown the ability to gently separate the vertebrae from each other, creating a vacuum inside the discs that we are targeting.  This “vacuum effect” is also known as negative intra-discal pressure.

The negative pressure may induce the retraction of their herniated or bulging disc into the inside of the disc, and off the nerve root, thecal sac, or both.  It happens only microscopically each time, but cumulatively, over four to six weeks, the results are quite dramatic.

The cycles of decompression and partial relaxation, over a series of visits, promote the diffusion of water, oxygen and nutrient-rich fluids from the outside of the discs to the inside.  These nutrients enable the torn and degenerated disc fibers to begin to heal.

For the low back, the patient lies comfortably on his/her back on the decompression table, with a set of nicely padded straps snug around the waist and another set around the upper part of the waist below the chest.  For the neck, the patient lies comfortably on his/her back with a pair of soft rubber pads behind the neck.  Many patients enjoy the treatment, as it is usually quite comfortable and well tolerated.

Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression is very effective at treating bulging discs, herniated discs, pinched nerves, sciatica, radiating arm pain, degenerative disc disease, leg pain, and facet syndromes.  Proper patient screening is imperative and only the best candidates are accepted for care.

Cold Laser Therapy

 What is laser therapy?

Cold Laser Therapy or Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) has been widely used in Europe for over thirty-five years in addition to being the subject of numerous studies with over 3,500 scientific papers published worldwide.  There have been no reported side effects to Cold Laser treatments, which are painless and non-toxic.

People worldwide are realizing the benefits of Cold Laser Therapy more than ever before and at the same time, American consumers are increasingly interested in alternative treatments.

For a long time now L.A.S.E.R. (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation) was an acronym and today a word of common use.  The word LASER is the name of a device that projects intense radiation of the light spectrum.  It produces a beam of light in which high energies can be concentrated.  Laser light has unique physical properties, which no ordinary light has.  The unique properties of coherence and monochromaticity are the key to why laser light is so effective compared to other kinds of light in pain reduction and healing.  Cold Laser Therapy, also known as phototherapy and low-level laser therapy, involves the application of low power coherent light to injuries and lesions to stimulate healing and reduce pain.  It is used to increase the speed, quality and strength of tissue repair, resolve inflammation and give pain relief.  Cold Laser therapy has been found to offer superior healing and pain relieving effects compared to other electrotherapeutic modalities such as ultrasound, especially in chronic problems and in the early stages of acute injuries.  Cold Laser Therapy is a complete system of treating muscle, tendon, ligament, connective tissue, bone, nerve, and dermal tissues in a non-invasive, drug-free modality.

How Does Cold Laser Therapy Work?

Cold Lasers can strengthen and heal damaged cells.  Using photochemical processes, laser lights inserts bio-photons into damaged cells.  The cells begin to produce energy (ATP), which improves their function, assists their division, strengthens the body’s immune system, and causes the secretion of various hormones.  The tissues are healed, and pain disappears.  If damaged cells have died, the bio-photons help the division of neighboring cells, generating new tissues, and thus bring about healing.

  • Low Level Laser Therapy promotes healing in many conditions because it penetrates the skin, increases the ATP and activates enzymes in the targeted cells.
  • Growth factor response within the cells and tissue as a result of increased ATP and protein synthesis.
  • Improved cell proliferation.
  • Pain relief as a result of increased endorphin release.
  • Strengthening the immune system response via increasing levels of lymphocyte activity.

SPORTS INJURIES

There are good reasons why the athlete should seek a sports chiropractor for the treatment and rehabilitation of a sports injury. Active people are physically and emotionally different from sedentary ones. Most physicians have not had special training in sports medicine or rehabilitation. Consequently, even outstanding physicians who don't treat athletes regularly often make mistakes in the diagnosis and treatment of athletes' neuromusculoskeletal problems.

It is also observed that the cumulative effects of constant athletic small stresses over a long duration can give rise to the same difficulties as severe sudden stress. Spinal injuries in sports constitute only about three percent of all athletic injuries. Thus, the chiropractor must be well prepared to manage the various musculoskeletal injuries that occur away from the spine.

The chiropractic approach toward athletic injuries has demonstrated that everyone is better served by having the injured player promptly and ably treated, thereby obtaining recovery before irreparable damage is done. The chiropractor must become not only the doer, but also the teacher. The chiropractor with a special interest in athletes must be prepared to handle their injuries, and must in turn pass this information on to other physicians. It must be recognized that in the management of athletic injuries, the patient must get complete recovery, or he or she is no longer an athlete.
